This past week me and a few co-workers were reminiscing about how music and music videos have changed dramatically. I'm not just talking about Hip-Hop and R&B. I'm talking music as a whole. The music videos in the 80s were about creativity. At times, the concept had nothing to do with the song, but you couldn't resist watching it.
Upper Playground collaborated with photographer Ricky Powell for its Spring/Summer 2009 collection. The front of the t-shirt has the photo of the late great DJ Jam Master Jay of RUN DMC. The back features the words “Rest in Peace to a great man. We will miss you.”

I was feeling a bit nostalgic, so on today's edition of MenStyle Monday I'm giving you another round of Ol' Skool Flava. Does the name Bernard Wright ring a bell? You may not know of him by name, but I'm sure you've heard his influences in today's music. Most notably LL Cool J's single "Loungin" featuring Total. Hmmm...how good is your memory. This song was the ish back in the day. Too bad it wasn't a major hit, which it should've been. I wonder what Jane Child is doing today?
With a new style of cell phone being released every other day, it's hard to imagine a time when it couldn't fit in your pocket or attach to your hip. During the 1980's, the Motorola DynaTAC8000X "brick" phone was the hottest thing going. Coporate honchos, actors, and rappers were the only people who could afford such luxury retailing at about $4,000. This was minus the emails, IM's and your favorite artist alerting you through song that you had a call (ringtones). The idea of paying $300 for a Blackberry nowadays doesn't sound so bad after all.
Hip-Hop was my first love. I remember being 6 years old and my sister blasting Run-DMC's "Rock Box" on the record player. I would dress up in my homemade ripped jeans and off the sleeve sweatshirt trying to "look like the teenage girls" my exact words back then. Another fond memory was when I was with my mom and I told her I wanted to carry and boombox and wear mix-match socks with my high-top Reebok sneakers (54.11's). Even back then I paid alot of attention to detail. Fast forward almost 20 years later and I'm still obsessed. ;-)
I continously have conversations about the state of music today. Compared to what was released in the past, R&B and Hip-Hop has lagged behind. I am one to say that the 90's was by far a poetic time in music. There are melodies and hooks that I remember verbatim 'til this day.
In short, my 90's obsession led to today's post. I was going through my music collection and wondered what ever happened to Horace Brown? With joints like: Things We Do For Love, Taste Your Love and One For The Money, he should have been put on the map. It was more than likely industry "politics" than his talent that led to this album being slept on.

Since it's the weekend and we have off for President's Day on Monday, I will do some SERIOUS clubbing! I'm paying homage to the DJ's out there with this cut.

Christion was a R&B group on Rocafella records in the late 90's. Unfortunately their project didn't lead to much while on Rocafella. You still reminisce to the smooth groove of yesteryear.
